Death: Tarot Card Meaning

Death tarot card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Death is the thirteenth card of the Major Arcana, and despite its name it rarely means a literal death. It stands for endings, transformation and renewal. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a skeleton in black armour rides a white horse past fallen figures, while a rising sun glows between two towers on the horizon. Something must end, the image says, so that something new can begin.

Upright meaning

Upright, Death signals the close of a chapter. A job, a habit, a relationship or a way of seeing yourself has run its course. The ending may feel uncomfortable, but it clears space for growth. Mark what is finished, thank it for what it gave you and allow yourself to move forward. Resisting what is already over only makes the change harder.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the card points to holding on, whether to an outdated situation, an old identity or a fear of change. You may know something needs to end but be avoiding it, or going through a slow transition that feels stuck. Ask what you are afraid will happen if you let go, and take one small step toward release.

In love

In love, Death usually means the end of a pattern or phase, not necessarily the relationship itself. A bond may be renewed in a deeper form, or you may be ready to leave one that has finished. Reversed, it suggests clinging to something that no longer works or fearing a necessary change.

In career

At work, it can mark the end of a job, project or career path, and the start of something better suited to you. Embrace the transition. Reversed, it warns against staying in a role out of fear or putting off a change you know is coming.

As a yes or no answer

As a yes or no answer, Death leans no when upright, because the situation as it stands is ending and something different is coming. Reversed, it is also a no, as the old way is not working but you are still resisting the change.
