Seven of Wands: Tarot Card Meaning

Seven of Wands tarot card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck

The Seven of Wands is about defending your position and standing your ground. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a figure stands on a hilltop, holding a wand and facing six wands thrust up from below. He has the higher ground, but he is outnumbered, and his mismatched shoes hint that he was caught unprepared. Even so, he does not give way.

Upright meaning

Upright, the Seven of Wands asks you to hold your ground. You may feel challenged or criticised, but you have the advantage of a strong position and a cause you believe in. Stay confident, and pick the arguments that matter instead of fighting every battle. Defending your beliefs is healthy, as long as you stay open to what is true.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, you may feel overwhelmed, worn down by constant defence or ready to give up. It can also mean being defensive without need, or avoiding a conflict you ought to face. Ask for support, let go of a fight that is not worth it, and be clear about what you are actually protecting.

In love

In love, the Seven of Wands suggests defending your relationship or your boundaries, or feeling you must prove your worth. Reversed, it points to exhaustion from constant conflict, giving in too much or being overly defensive.

In career

At work, it points to competition, defending your ideas or position, and having to stand up for yourself. Reversed, it warns of burnout, being overwhelmed or backing down when you should speak up.

As a yes or no answer

As a yes or no answer, the Seven of Wands leans yes when upright, as long as you are willing to stand firm and defend your position. Reversed, it becomes a maybe, so you may need support first.

Advice from this card

Decide which one point is worth defending and let the smaller disagreements go. A clear, calm stance holds up better than constant argument.
