Temperance: Tarot Card Meaning

Temperance tarot card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Temperance is the fourteenth card of the Major Arcana and stands for balance, moderation and patient healing. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck an angel with one foot on land and one in water pours liquid between two cups, beneath a path that winds toward a glowing crown. It is a picture of blending opposites into something harmonious, one careful pour at a time.

Upright meaning

Upright, Temperance encourages you to find the middle way. Balance your work with rest, your needs with other people’s, and your head with your heart. Gradual, steady progress will serve you better than extremes. It is a card of healing, patience and quiet confidence that things are coming together, even if the results are not yet visible.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, balance is lost. You might be overdoing something, burning out, overspending or swinging between extremes. Impatience can also be at work, with a wish for quick results from something that needs time. Slow down, simplify and restore your rhythm, starting with one area of your life that has tipped too far.

In love

In love, Temperance suggests harmony, compromise and a relationship that grows through patience and mutual care. It can also point to healing after hurt. Reversed, it suggests an imbalance in giving and receiving, differing paces or a pattern of ups and downs that needs steadiness.

In career

At work, it favours teamwork, steady effort, mediation and a sustainable pace. Blend different strengths and avoid extremes. Reversed, it warns of overcommitment, uneven workloads or hasty choices that upset the balance.

As a yes or no answer

As a yes or no answer, Temperance is a maybe when upright: progress is possible if you stay patient and keep things balanced. Reversed, it leans no, because excess or impatience is getting in the way.
