The Chariot: Tarot Card Meaning

The Chariot tarot card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck

The Chariot is the seventh card of the Major Arcana and represents determination, willpower and victory through focus. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a young charioteer stands in a canopied cart, drawn by two sphinxes, one black and one white, who seem to pull in different directions. He holds no reins. Control comes from his will, not from force.

Upright meaning

Upright, The Chariot says you can move ahead if you stay focused. Obstacles and competing pulls are present, but a clear goal and steady effort will carry you through. It is a card of progress, drive and confidence. Decide where you are going, hold your course and keep your emotions and your ambitions working together.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, direction is lost or the forces pulling you apart are winning. You might be pushing hard without a clear target, being controlled by someone else, or feeling aggression and frustration take over. Stop, choose your goal and bring your competing impulses into line before you accelerate again.

In love

In love, The Chariot suggests pursuing what you want with confidence, or a relationship moving forward with energy and shared purpose. Reversed, it can point to a tug of war between partners, mixed goals or too much ego in the dynamic.

In career

At work, it is a strong card for ambition, achievement, travel and winning a competition or promotion. Keep your focus and drive. Reversed, it warns of burnout, scattered effort or a push that lacks direction.

As a yes or no answer

As a yes or no answer, The Chariot leans yes when upright, as long as you commit with focus and persistence. Reversed, it becomes a maybe, and you need to sort out your direction before moving.

Advice from this card

Name one goal and one habit that serves it, and protect both from distractions this week. Momentum comes from direction, so decide where you are going before you press the accelerator.
