The Fool: Tarot Card Meaning

The Fool tarot card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck

The Fool is the first card of the Major Arcana, numbered zero, and it stands for beginnings, trust and a willingness to step into the unknown. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck a young traveller walks toward a cliff edge with a small bag, a white rose and a dog at his heels, looking up at the sky instead of down at his feet. The image is playful, but it carries a serious question: what would you try if you were not afraid of getting it wrong?

Upright meaning

Upright, The Fool invites you to begin. A new job, a move, a creative project or a change of mind is waiting, and the card says you do not need every answer before you start. It values curiosity, openness and spontaneity over careful planning. Take the invitation, but pack what you truly need. Trust is not the same as carelessness, and the card asks for both courage and a little common sense.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the energy turns inward or goes astray. You may be hesitating at the edge, talking yourself out of something you want, or leaping without checking where you will land. Ask which it is. If fear is the brake, take one small step instead of a giant leap. If impulse is the driver, slow down and look at the risks before you commit your time or money.

In love

In love, The Fool points to a fresh start: a new relationship, a new openness after a hard time, or a new chapter within a long partnership. It encourages honesty, lightness and a willingness to be seen. Reversed, it can suggest rushing in too fast, ignoring red flags, or holding back out of fear of being hurt.

In career

In work, The Fool favours a new role, a career change, a side project or a first attempt at something you have only imagined. Be willing to look like a beginner. Reversed, it warns against quitting, signing or launching on impulse, and against staying in a safe job purely because the unknown feels frightening.

As a yes or no answer

As a yes or no answer, The Fool leans yes when upright, with the note that you should prepare as you go. Reversed, it becomes a maybe: the idea may be sound, but the timing or your readiness needs another look.
